FM is Frequency Modulation
AM is amplitude modulation

AM signals travel farther then FM waves thanks to the ionosphere. While FM signals is limited to about 40 miles, AM can be heard 100 miles+ distance.

FM is technically a better system for transmitting a clear signal, however, the FM band is overly jammed with too many radio stations. AM is still 100% necessary

The FM radio antenna is just a wire. If I let it dangle down to the floor it picks up some channels.

I live in the city, so their’s a lot of channels, but I only pick some up. The ones I do pick up don’t have the best sound quality. What can I do with the wire if anything) to improve the signal strength? Thanks

If you are inside, the best policy to get any signal…. put the antenna or wire in the window. you can tape it around the frame, to conceal it. Sometimes the stereo system’s tuner can also be at fault. Differing models have differing sensitivity to signal. If you do not get as many stations as you like, I’d talk to the store that sold it to you, since you do not know who to calibrate the AGC gain to the tuner. Sometimes the tuner, itself is not calibrated right. Panasonic’s are becoming a major brand that has this happening.

Best bet so far… wrap the wire around the closest window. Then go from there. This works for TV as well.
