Why do I hear an FM radio station on my phone?

Posted by admin on February 17th, 2010 and filed under fm radio | 3 Comments »

There’s a powerful FM station near me, and I hear music faintly on one of my landline telephones. People I call on that phone say that they also hear the radio station on their end. I’ve heard about AM stations interfering with phones, but I have an FM station interfering with the phone. I also hear a 60Hz hum under the music which varies in amplitude as I move the phone cord. What could I do to stop the interference?

well your phone chord actually works like an antena… it does not usually pick-up radio frequecies.. but try to consider how near you live besides the FM station.. try to ask the telephone company if they have alternatives or ways to fix that

not much you can do about the 60hz except possibly moving the phone to a different room. most electronics have this problem if brought close enought to an outlet.

Telephones have much the same design as radios. I suspect that the close radio station is powerful enough to make an audible sound through the phone.

A higher quality phone should solve the problem. Also you might see if there’s a phone ine filter that might reduce the problem.

call youur local phone provider to repair this problem.. noting that you said there is a hum on your line you may have a ground on your phone line, but if not your line is either on a split pair, or unbalanced…

phone lines operate on twisted pair wire… when one wire is longer then another, or if then are split on 2 diffrent pairs of wire, and therefore not twisted around eachother, they act as an antenna and pick up induction…

the phone company should change the cable./pair that your dial tone is on.. or at least install an RF filter on your line
