Radio stations have a mic and they are miles away from there station and it stills connects with there station.
Most are using Cellphones these days to call in. The old days we used "Marty Units" that had to be positioned just right for a good signal to the station. Some times we use the old reliable phone line.
There are all kinds of equipment out there, next time you see them out and about ask them when they are not broadcasting what equipment they use. Some will actually have a clue others will not.

Have seen them. they have used them for the on site promos they have done for me. and it is recorded.

There are also "remote broadcast" boxes made by companies such as Gentner and Telex that are still used. The microphone connects to the box and the box itself has a phone system..so it’s still a phone system, basically.
In the older days of radio, we would have to special order telephone lines from the phone company to do remotes or broadcast sports. I
have also had to use the already-mentioned Marti units.
