Why does the radio goes silent when starting the engine of a car?

Why is it that when you start the engine of a car, the radio goes silent for the duration of the ignition?

Like, you insert the key. Turn the key once. The battery to the car is on and the radio (if on) starts. You can hear the radio stations and everything just fine. But once you turn and hold the key further to start the car, all the sounds of the radio stop, but it’s still on.

What’s up with that?

The computer directs the power to starting the car, which causes this effect.

Starting the engine of the car requires quite a few amps. So as the key is turned the car’s computer redirects the amps to the starter, and only a trickle of power comes to the radio. Enough to leave it partially powered but not enough for audio.

the starter motor draws all of the available charge from the battery.
